The Earth is Singing by Vanessa Curtis is the story of Hanna Michelson, a young Latvian girl, who is living with her Jewish Mother and Grandmother. The story follows the challenges faced by the Jewish community living in Latvia during the Second World War and the Holocaust.
This book is beautifully written without skirting around the harrowing tale of Hanna and her family. It is brutally honest but in a respectful way towards the horrors of that period in history. It not only deals with the trauma and emotion of the period but also the tribulations of being a teenage girl.
I thoroughly recommend this book. It was emotional and gripping. I couldn’t put it down (in fact I read it in a day, it was that enthralling).
