Book Review - Girls For The Vote

Girls For the Vote by Linda Newbery. (Part of the 6 Chelsea Walk series)

Polly is a 12 year old girl who lives in 6 Chelsea Walk. This story takes us through her meeting her new neighbours, Violet and Edwina, who are two suffragettes fighting for women’s right to vote.

I really enjoyed this book. It is aimed at 9+, possibly because of the references to hunger strikes and prison, but it is easy to understand and is a good example of understanding the suffragette movement. I loved the historical content and the references to real life events such as the reaction to the start of the First World War from the perspective of a child and also the general attitudes towards the suffragettes. The book didn't detract from the historical content and in fact, would help understanding for any children studying this at school.

There were some occasions when the characters seemed quite naive but then when you consider that it is written from the point of view of Polly who is only 12 this is understandable. In fact, that made it more believable.

Overall it was a thoroughly pleasant read
